Frontier Club: A New Gil Hanse Destination Course in Ann Arbor's Backyard

Frontier Club is a new destination golf course project in Ann Arbor's backyard, designed by Gil Hanse. The 350-acre former farmland, located about ten minutes from the University of Michigan's Big House, will become a private club developed by Michigan natives James Housler and Scott Kovanda. Hanse says 17 of the 18 holes were already waiting on the property, suggesting a land-driven, minimalist design similar to his acclaimed work at Ohoopee Match Club and The Fall Line. The project is positioned as a "smaller-scale Crystal Downs," setting a high expectation in golf architecture circles. Crystal Downs is one of America's top courses, and any comparison to it invites intense scrutiny. Hanse's involvement is the project's strongest asset, while the developers' relative lack of golf-development experience is its biggest unknown. Fred Perpall, former USGA President, is leading Beck Group's design of the clubhouse and cottages. A key risk is Michigan's short golf season. A destination club in a five-to-six month season faces higher operating costs and a more difficult value proposition for out-of-state members. Another challenge is regulatory approval for converting farmland and managing water features. If construction begins later this year as stated, the project will need to navigate zoning, environmental permits, and soil conditions. Success could make Frontier Club a bellwether for destination golf in northern climates.
